A wooden chess set replicating Man Ray’s exquisite 1920 design. Made from German solid beech wood, beech veneer & black dyed Bolivar wood, each square on the board is handcrafted and inlaid by specialists in Germany.
Man Ray learned to play chess with his friend and fellow artist Marcel Duchamp. Whilst Duchamp went on to play chess professionally, Man Ray was preoccupied with the artistic possibilities that the board itself opened up for him.
He created several chess sets over his career, with this one inspired by geometric ‘ideal forms’ and found objects from his studio, resulting in pyramid kings, cone-shaped queens, flagon bishops, cubic rooks, spherical pawns, and the distinctive violin head -scroll knight.
The pieces range in size from 4cm to 9cm, and the board measures 42cm x 42cm.
