A Quintessential Transformation: Breathing new life into an 18th Century Oxfordshire Estate

In the world of interior design, there's something incredibly rewarding about breathing new life into heritage properties.

One of our recent projects, a Grade 1 listed 18th century manor house nestled in the heart of picturesque Oxfordshire was in need of loving restoration.

What was once a grand billiard room, with tall ceilings and wonderful architecture, was transformed into a spacious, rustic modern kitchen.

Our objective was not simply to re-imagine the space, but to do so in a way that carefully blended its original historical character without compromising its architectural integrity.

The Grand Billiard Room

The billiard room, situated in the heart of the manor house, displays beautifully high ceilings, large windows, stone walls and a majestic fireplace. The room was rich with history and character, a space that had always lent itself to entertaining and enjoyment, a dream canvas for this type of project.

Refurbishment With Respect

Transforming the billiard room into a kitchen required meticulous planning and close liaison with all key contractors on site.

The added challenge of working inside a Grade 1 listed building ensured a sensitive approach, respecting its history and heritage at all times.

Our approach covered 4 key aspects:

Preserving the architectural integrity

Architectural features such as the high ceilings, structural layout and stonewalls were carefully preserved and restored, whilst adhering to the typical restrictions derived from a listed building status.

Balancing heritage with modernity

High-end modern appliances, fixtures and bespoke cabinetry were chosen to create a rustic modern aesthetic. A neutral palette with soft undertones provides a warm and welcoming atmosphere where the wooden surfaces add natural texture.

Maximising natural light

With such large windows, we ensured the design took full advantage of natural light. This really helped to illuminate the space whilst enhancing its rustic aesthetic, all with the convenience of the modern appliances built in.

Open layout design

The design is an open one that flows to encourage that welcoming feel for family and friends. Kitchens are often the centre of a home, and the large island stands out as a key feature. Creating this central focal point, provides a functional space for preparation, or a relaxing area to gather around.

The Result: A rustic modern kitchen that respects its heritage

The finished result is a stunning kitchen that combines rustic charm and modern convenience. Working in harmony, they create a space that exudes character and functionality with appliances and fixtures authentically finding their place, enhancing the overall aesthetic.

By respecting the Grade 1 listed building, the combination of history, heritage and contemporary design all come together beautifully, breathing new life into what was once a grand billiard room.

Insights from this project

With listed buildings, it’s super-important to preserve the architectural integrity, alongside respecting the various regulations and stipulations that come with such historic buildings.

Introducing modern elements to a heritage building requires well-considered design choices that complement the existing aesthetic, alongside project co-ordination with key contractors.

In a kitchen, function has to take priority, and in this case it's about balance. Ensuring the design enhances usability but also respects the original space.

Allowing natural light to really shine accentuates the rustic, and modern elements of the design.

"I very much enjoyed working on this project and to see the end result come together was so exciting."
